Where early vaporwave leaned on recognisable 1980s samples, 2814 set out to prove the aesthetic could be built from scratch. HKE has said the aim of Birth of a New Day was "to show how the whole vaporwave vibe could be made as original music rather than just relying on the same muzak and kitsch-pop samples everyone else had been using for years".
Rolling Stone called the result "a late night cruise through the cyber-future dream highway". The duo tagged their own sound dreampunk and slushwave: ambient, cinematic, largely sample-free, and made by "sending each other files back and forth over the internet". HKE has released more than a hundred albums across aliases on his Dream Catalogue label, and helped spawn hardvapour.
Active years are listed as ending in 2020 and no confirmed new 2814 material exists. Laurila revived Telepath in 2025 with Dawn Arrives, his first classic-style slushwave record in a decade, and played ElectroniCON that year. HKE, on the duo's brief run: "I realize that I will likely never have any work become as popular as that again, but that's cool with me."
