Daniel Lopatin
In August 2010 Lopatin pressed a hundred cassettes under the alias Chuck Person and called the tape Eccojams Vol. 1. He took single loops from decades-old pop songs, slowed them, and drowned them in reverb and delay — DJ Screw's chopped-and-screwed method applied to Toto and Michael McDonald rather than Houston rap.
He has described it as "a DIY practice that didn't involve any specialized music tech knowledge", a way of handling audio that "had very little to do with music and everything to do with feelings". Eccojams and James Ferraro's Far Side Virtual are the two first templates, both released before the genre had a name or a face.
As Oneohtrix Point Never he has since drifted a long way out — Warp records, a Cannes soundtrack award, Weeknd co-writes, a 2026 Critics' Choice nomination for scoring Marty Supreme — while still trading in the same sample-warped nostalgia at a larger budget. Original Eccojams cassettes now reach $400 on Discogs. He made the tape largely in the free editor GoldWave.
